Map and directions to St James’ Church, Lossiemouth

Note that the correct postal address for the Church is St James’ Church of Scotland, Prospect Terrace, Lossiemouth IV31 6JS

(i.e. it is not “Coulardhill” – we’re currently trying to get Google to correct Google Maps – see below – as regards postal address, though the red pin position in the map below is fairly accurate).

How to find us – Getting to St James’ Church Lossiemouth

St James’ Church of Scotland, Lossiemouth, is situated on Prospect Terrace, which runs along the south side of Coulardhill. On the approach from Elgin, the church’s pointed spire is a prominent feature on the skyline, to the east (right) of the red roof of the town’s other Church of Scotland, St Gerardine’s High Church.

Travel by car

Approaching from Elgin, you arrive in Lossiemouth on the A941.  Passing the 30mph limit, you are on Elgin Road and you follow that road past the playing fields on the left. As the A941 turns sharply right, to become Clifton Road, take the road (School Brae) going steeply uphill on the left (see bottom left corner of above map). The church straight ahead of you up School Brae is St Gerardine’s and, as you reach that church, School Brae bends to the left. You need to make a right turn into Prospect Terrace (which is the road on the level, not going downhill), after which St James’ Church soon comes into view on the left. There are views to the right over the mouth of the River Lossie (the blue area at the right of the above map), the East Beach and, in the distance, Buckie and the Bin of Cullen (the prominent hill on the eastern skyline).

Approaching from Hopeman / Burghead, keep straight on until you see (simultaneously) Moray Golf Club clubhouse on the left and the Stotfield Hotel on the right.  Make a right turn immediately after the Stotfield, into St Gerardine’s Road.  Follow that road up the hill and over the brow of the hill, at which point St Gerardine’s High Church comes into view on the left.  You need to turn left immediately after the church into Prospect Terrace (which is the road which stays on the level, not going downhill), after which St James’ Church soon comes into view on the left.

Travel by bus

Lossiemouth is served by Stagecoach Bluebird’s services 33A and 33C from Elgin Bus Station.  Buses come into Lossiemouth and leave via the A941. Within the town, buses follow a circular route (“A” stands for anti-clockwise and “C” for clockwise). This route does not take the bus directly past the Church. The closest bus stop to the Church is on Clifton Road, opposite Queen’s Lane. However, this requires a steep climb up to Prospect Terrace.  A gentler uphill approach is from James Square, via Kinneddar Street and Lesmurdie Place.

Parking

There is on-street parking on the north side of Prospect Terrace to the east and west of the church.  If this area is full up, the best option is King Street, between Dunbar Street and Prospect Terrace, which is to the east of the church.

Disabled access

The area immediately in front of the Church is always coned off before morning services to allow easy access.  A disabled ramp is available to facilitate wheelchair access via the door at the foot of the spire and the church has specially widened areas among the pews specifically for wheelchair users.

Now it’s Time to Change your Ways!

April 18, 2021 By 2

It’s the Third Sunday of Easter – 18 April 2021.

This is the time in the Christian calendar when the main scriptural readings all come from Acts (of the Apostles – i.e. the actions of the followers of Jesus in the immediate aftermath of his death and resurrection).

Ths week it’s Acts 3:12-19. The other Lectionary readings for this week are: Psalm 4;
1 John 3:1-7; and Luke 24:36b-48.

With the resumption of face-to-face services at St James from 04 April 2021, we are in a period of ‘hybrid’ services with an in-person element and a video/remote element via this website. For the video service, which you will find below, we post the main reading from Acts, the service of readings, prayers and the sermon (led by Rev. Geoff McKee), and a Musical Selection from our director of music, Katherine Robertson.

The main reading from Acts.

Acts 3:12-19 (New International Version)
12 When Peter saw this, he said to them: “Fellow Israelites, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? 13 The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go. 14 You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. 15 You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this. 16 By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see.

17 “Now, fellow Israelites, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did your leaders. 18 But this is how God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, saying that his Messiah would suffer. 19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.

“Now it’s time to change your ways!” – Acts 3:19 – From The Message Bible translation by Eugene Peterson (The Bible in Contemporary Language).
